Karl Krueger is a sole proprietor Architect and Artist in Avon, Colorado. Karl was raised in, and grew up with the ski mountain and town that has become Vail, Colorado. Karl’s parents moved from the Midwest to the mountains to raise their family, ski, and build a town (and a golf course). Karl’s early years playing and working in the winter and summer landscape of the mountain west has had an indelible influence. A product of the public schools of the Vail Valley, Karl went on to study Architecture at the University of Notre Dame, a 5-yr professional degree program. The third year out of the five year program was spent immersed in study of the art, architecture and urban environs of Italy while based in the heart of Rome and touring wider Italy and western Europe.
Looking for historical roots and the “urban” in his own western United States, Karl interned in Albuquerque, New Mexico with a former Note Dame graduate student instructor and Professor of Architecture at UNM, Edward Fitzgerald. Continuing his involvement with academia and the side pursuits of drawing and metal sculpture, Karl completed his apprenticeship and time in Albuquerque, culminating in becoming a Licensed Architect in New Mexico in 1996. With an un-resolved curiosity and affinity for philosophical topics and their relation to art and architecture, Karl applied and was accepted to a Masters of Architecture at Yale University. High caliber architectural theory and studio courses and critiques were paired with selected coursework in painting, sculpture, art history, anthropology, product design and philosophy in a self directed 2-year program. Despite the motivating milieus of universities and dense cities of the Midwest and East Coast karl’s interest is applying his education and experience to western
Since graduating from Yale, Karl has made his hometown his project, completing dozens of residential, commercial, and industrial projects and several commissions for public art. Karl also serves on. several community committees and boards. Karl met his spouse, Pavan, also an architect, while she was a graduate student in Albuquerque.
